The fellowship is one year duration, during which the fellow will develop clinical, critical thinking, and teaching skills in the area of clinical nutrition. There are multiple ICU rotations which will provide exposure to a variety of medical and surgical ICU patient populations. Each rotation will have an area of concentration which will allow the fellow to gain an understanding of the evidence-based approach and nuances of caring for critically ill patients with different disease processes. In addition, the fellow will evaluate and manage patients who are on regular patient care units, but are complex and require forced feeding with parenteral nutrition (PN) or tube feeds. The clinical exposure will be supported with a basic core curriculum of readings and rotation specific readings. There will be didactic teaching from the fellowship director and coordinator in one-on-one teaching session and rounding with the Nutrition Support Service physicians and senior dietitians from the Department of Nutrition. As the fellow advances, he or she will assume greater responsibility for managing sick patients and have greater independence, with the supervision of the nutrition support service physician of the week.
Each fellow is expected to participate in scholarly activities under the mentorship of a nutrition support service attending physicians. Such activities may include writing a book chapter or review article, performing a chart review, or working on another clinic project of short duration.
Finally, the fellow will be expected to attend the weekly nutrition support service multidisciplinary teaching conference during which complex cases are presented and discussed with the nutrition support service physician. The fellow will be required to present a clinically relevant topic on nutrition for 30 minutes one time per month at this conference. This will assist the fellow with the acquisition of teaching skills.
